Wonder Woman gets my vote

I agree with Doc Justice that it is a shame that the creators of this poll did not see fit to include any of the women superheroes on it. Whether in comic book, TV series or cartoon, Wonder Woman has provided an outstanding role model for girls.

Sadly, the more I read this message board, the more I understand the omission of Wonder Woman and other female superheroes from the poll. While there have been a few noteworthy posts extolling the virtues of Wonder Woman, Supergirl, and Phoenix for their abilities, character, or historic significance, a number of other posters have only shown an interest in ranking superheroines according to how "cute," "hot," "fine," or "sexy" they are (although one person did comment on Fathom's ability to change into water, this was immediately followed by praise for her preferred choice of wardrobe--a bikini). To me, this is exactly the type of attitude that perpetuates the worst "fanboy" stereotypes of comic book readers.

For a merit-based list of favorite female superheroes, see my previous post "Re: Where are the women in your poll?!!!!" on 6/16/03 in response to the message from LDH.

I'll give you an example of the pig-headedness that runs rampant in comic book fandom.

We have this one guy who admits to have never had "relations" with a woman. (I'm watching my language as this is a site perused by children.) Well, anyway, he has this "Great" idea about the ultimate WW story.

Explore the idea that Wonder Woman is bi-sexual.

The idea for this is that Wonder Woman and the Amazons are immortal and on an island full of women, someone would get bored.

That's his whole premise.

See, pig-headedness. And, the funny thing is that this jerk thinks he's 'enlightened!'

Actually, it has long seemed logical to me that a lesbian culture would have naturally evolved out of the unique conditions of life on Themyscira, particularly given that ancient Greek culture (of which the Amazons were a part) had a very fluid interpretation of sexual orientation.

Having said that, basing an entire Wonder Woman plot around the subject of Amazonian sexuality seems like a pretty flimsy excuse for a plot, with no other justification--as demonstrated by the crudeness with which the premise was presented to you--than to titillate the puerile interests of adolescents (whether in terms of age of emotional maturity).

Regardless of her sexual orientation, Wonder Woman's sex life should play as much (or rather, as little) a part in her comics as that of Superman, Batman, or any other male superhero.
