"It's a guy thing"

Jul 10, 2003 4:53 PM
I'm am currently watching the Modern Marvels episode on digital devices (Digitech). It has multiple times said and shown that it believes that technological "toys" are "a guy thing." As a *female* computer science major typing this on her own computer than she assembled herself, I find this as stereotypical as "a woman's place is in the kitchen." I realize that women and computers are not that common, but am I the only one who is annoyed by this stereotype?

Chibi Usagi:
I understand your offense at the appearance of old attitudes, i.e., "It's a guy thing," and other perceived slights in the narration of the program.
I'm sure they were unintended, as the episode you mentioned, and about 4 others taped at the same time, were part of a weeklong series about a year ago called "Modern Marvels Boys' Toys," featuring many Bond-esque gadgets and creations of the like, and it was done, at the time, purely with a tongue-in-cheek attitude.
But, you're right; when they un-combined the series to air as individual episodes, the narration should've been adjusted.
Of course, that takes money. :)

Hello,

No I am a male, age 40, and a computer support manager for the government. I think it's impressive that you are so technically literate. And I hire male and female workers. Truth be told, the female workers are much better!!! If you look at this board, you will see I knock this show for the amount of times it is aired, as well as it's contenct and accuracy. Your post just adds to my feelings about it.

Thank you. I just wanted to make sure I was not unjustified in my annoyance.
